Leitra Young Maxwell a Georgia native, was born and raised in Macon, Georgia where she still resides with her husband, Shawn Maxwell and their two daughters, Madison and Logan.  Attorney Maxwell attended public school in Macon and Jones County and graduated from Jones County High School in 1996.  Thereafter, she received a full athletic scholarship to play Division I basketball at Furman University, one of the nation’s premier undergraduate liberal arts colleges. While at Furman, she served as captain of the women’s basketball team for two consecutive years and played on two NCAA Division I Southern Conference Championship teams. Attorney Maxwell graduated from Furman University with a Bachelors of Arts degree in English and Political Science.

Attorney Maxwell earned a Juris Doctorate in 2004 from the University of South Carolina School of Law where she was the recipient of the Strom Thurmond Scholarship, an award based on academic merit, for three consecutive years. At USC she had the distinction of serving as president of the Black Law Students Association and as a member of the Dean Search Committee.  She was sworn into the South Carolina Bar on November 12, 2004 and admitted to practice before the United States District Court for South Carolina in 2006.

 

While in law school, Attorney Maxwell had the opportunity to work as a law clerk with the Gist Law Firm, a prestigious employment law firm in Columbia, South Carolina.  Upon graduation, she accepted a position as an Associate Attorney with the firm and honed her State and Federal Court litigation skills as she represented a vast array of clients including several professional athletes.  While working at the Gist Law Firm she was featured in the South Carolina Lawyers Weekly and the Carolina Panorama for her work on two notable cases.

On December 18, 2008, Attorney Maxwell expanded her practice area and was sworn into the Georgia Bar and admitted to practice before the United States District Court for the Middle District of Georgia in 2014.

In 2013, Attorney Maxwell joined the Law Offices of Forrest B. Johnson & Associates where she manages its Macon location and assists clients with their personal injury, auto accident, tractor trailer collision, and wrongful death claims.  Since joining the firm, she has helped recover millions of dollars for her clients.

Attorney Maxwell is always happy to share her expertise and experience and has spoken at schools and churches throughout South Carolina and Georgia and taught Business Law at Fort Valley State University.  She is also very active in the community and sits on the board of several local 501(c) (3)’s and teaches children’s church at Hope for Today, Inc.  Additionally, she is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated, a member of the 2015 Leadership Macon Class, and recipient of The National Black Lawyers Top 100 for 2015.
